Carbon Steel Alloys

Carbon steel alloys, such as springs and high-strength components, are frequently chosen for wire-forming applications. As the carbon content in the alloy increases, so do its hardness and strength.

Carbon steel is known for its conductivity and strength and is also cost-effective. However, it is prone to rust, making it unsuitable for environments with high moisture levels.

Two types of carbon steel are:

  • High carbon steel, often called “music wire,” is solid but tends to be less flexible and more brittle.
  • Low-carbon steel is a better option for applications requiring flexibility, such as low-stress springs.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel contains chromium and other metals, enhancing corrosion resistance. This makes it a preferred choice for parts that need to withstand exposure to moisture without rusting.

Copper

Copper is a versatile metal that is strong and more flexible than steel. Copper offers excellent electrical and high thermal conductivity, making it an ideal material for various electrical industry applications.

Bronze

Bronze is another corrosion-resistant material that is also an excellent conductor. Because of these properties, it is often used to produce conductive springs.

Aluminum

Aluminum is known for its resistance to corrosion and its lightweight. While it is more flexible than steel, it is not as strong. However, its combination of properties makes it suitable for applications where weight and flexibility are essential.

Nickel

Nickel and its alloys are highly resistant to corrosion and maintain stability across a wide range of temperatures. These alloys are non-magnetic and poor conductors of electricity, making nickel a good alternative to steel when non-magnetic components are needed.
